Game Summaries

 

 Game 20

Kirkwood – 14-13-9-17 = 53

Vianney    - 13-2-13-10 = 38

On Thursday, February 15th the Kirkwood Sophomore boys’ team took on Vianney. The first quarter was hard fought with the Pioneers taking a 14-13 lead. The second quarter saw the Pioneers defense get busy. Kirkwood gave up just 2 points in the quarter taking a big 27-15 point lead into the locker room. In the third quarter, Vianney narrowed the lead to 8 points.

Fourth quarters are often decided by the team that wants the win the most. This night the Pioneers answered that question decisively. On the back of 5 points by both Peter Krusing and Joe Comfort in the fourth quarter alone, the Pioneers put the game on ice. The final was a convincing 53-38 win over Vianney Golden Griffins Sophomores.

In the game Mark Bearden led all scorers with 17 points. Joe Comfort added 11, and Ricky McNabb chipped in 8. In the game the Neers went an impressive 18-21 from the line. This included Mark Bearden going 5-5, Joe Comfort going 4-4 and Peter Krusing going 5-6. The win improved the team’s record to 8-12 on the season. 

 

Game 19   Kirkwood vs. Oakville

Kirkwood - 16-10-13-12 = 51

Oakville  -     13-8-14-17 = 52

On Wednesday, February 14th Kirkwood hosted the Oakville Tigers. Kirkwood got off to a fast start. The quarter saw Ahmad Hicks with 5 points, Mark Bearden and Mycole Pruitt with 4 each and Ricky McNabb with 3. As the quarter ended the Neers led 16-13. In spite of the fact that Kirkwood only scored 10 points in the second quarter, Kirkwood extended the lead to 26-21. Kirkwood went to the locker room leading 26-21.

In the third quarter, Mark Bearden went an amazing 8-8 from the free throw line. Also, Ricky McNabb had a 5 point quarter. The Tigers, however, executed their transition game very well and cut the Kirkwood lead to 4 points by the end of the quarter. Joe Comfort and Mark Bearden turned in strong fourth quarters performances with Joe scoring 6 points and Mark chipping in 4. The Tigers continued to execute their transition game. The Pioneers withered under the Tigers onslaught and narrowly lost, 52-51.

Mark Bearden tied for the high scorer of the night with 18 points. He had an awesome night from the free throw line, going 10 for 10! Ricky McNAbb added 11, and Ahmad Hicks came up big with 8 points.

 

 

Game 18

Kirkwood –           3-10-11-11= 35

Parkway Central   11-3-7-5 =    26

On Wednesday February 7th , the Kirkwood Pioneers sophomore’s traveled to take on the Colt’s of Parkway Central. The game started slowly for Kirkwood. Parkway Central jumped out to an 11-3 first quarter lead. The second quarter saw Kirkwood cut substantially into the Colt’s lead. On the strength of a good quarter by Mark Bearden and a 3 pointer by Ricky McNabb the Neers cut Parkway’s lead to 14-13. 

In spite of an injury that caused Mycole Pruitt to miss part of the second quarter and the whole second half, the Pioneers pulled together. Ricky had 5 points in the 3rd quarter alone. Mark Bearden added 4, along with Peter Kruising’s and the early deficit had turned into a 3 point lead. The 4th quarter saw balance in the Kirkwood attack. Devon Lee, Mark Bearden, Kris Nelson, Joe Comfort and Peter Kruising all scored in the quarter. When the final horn sounded Kirkwood got out of the Colt’s house with a 35-26 win.

The Pioneers will be back in action Wednesday, February 14th when we host Oakville.

Do not forget about Post game with the Pioneers on Friday, February 16th after the varsity game with Lindbergh. The fun will start around 8:30 P.M.

There will be skill contests for boys’ in the 4th – 8th grades. It will be a night to remember for our young Pioneer athletes.

 

 

 Game 17

Kirkwood vs. Fox 

Kirkwood   13-13-19-18 = 63

Fox            11-10-10-10 = 41

On Tuesday, February 6th, the Kirkwood boys’ hosted Fox. Mark Bearden, Joe comfort and Ahmad Hicks led the early charge. Mark had 9 points in the first quarter, and Joe and Ahmad chipped in 2 each as the Pioneers charged out of the gate to a 13-11 lead. The second quarter saw Kris Nelson kick in 5, and Mark Bearden and Joe Comfort added 4. The Pioneers went to the locker room ahead 26-21.

Kirkwood took control of the game in the second half. With excellent ball movement by Devon Lee, and a first class offensive rebounding effort by Mycole Pruitt, the Neers led 45-31 after 3 quarters. Mycole had 6 points in the quarter, Devon had 4, and Ahmad had 3. The Pioneers ran away and his in the 4th quarter en route to a 63-41 victory. Mark Bearden led all scorers with 20, followed by Joe Comfort with 10, Ahmad Hicks with 9, Joe Comfort with 8, and Kris Nelson with 7. It was a real team effort for the Pioneers.

The Pioneers will be back in action on Wednesday, February 14th against Oakville at 5:30 P.M.. Also, don’t forget about Post game with the Pioneers Friday, February 16th  for boys’ in the 4th – 8th grade. It will start after the Lindbergh varsity game. We will have skill contests and games. Game 16

Kirkwood vs. Parkway South  site: Parkway South

Kirkwood              11-7-14-15 = 47

Parkway South      11-18-25-6 = 60

 

The Kirkwood Pioneer’s sophomore team traveled to take on the Parkway South Patriots. The Pioneers, on the strength of 4 points in the quarter by Mark Bearden, as well as a 3 by Devon Lee, the Pioneers charged ahead 11-5. The Patriots ended the quarter strong, however, by hitting 2 3’s resulting in an 11-11 tie after 1. The second quarter was choppy for the Pioneers. Mark Bearden had 4 points in the quarter and Mycole Pruitt added 2. However, it was not enough to prevent a 29-18 deficit at halftime.

The third quarter saw a torrent of points from South. Their offensive attack was very effective as the Pioneers fell behind 54-32 after 3 periods. The quarter saw some positives with Mark Bearden having a 6 point quarter and Mycole Pruitt chipping in 4.The Pioneers refused to give up though. The fourth quarter saw good ball movement and excellent free throw shooting by Kris Nelson. Kris made 5 free throws in the quarter. Also, Pete Krusing, came alive in the quarter and also had 5 points. It was not enough, however, as Parkway outpaced Kirkwood 60-47. Mark Bearden outpaced all scorers with 14.Other Pioneers with solid point totals included Kris Nelson with 7, Pete Krusing with 7, Mycole Pruitt with 6, and Joe Comfort with 5. Devon Lee good passes to go with his 4 points.

The Sophomores come home Tuesday, February 6th when we will take on Fox. The game is at 5:30 P.M. followed by the varsity at 7:00. Your support is welcome

 

 

Game 15   January 30, 2007    Site: Kirkwood High School

Kirkwood   7-7-10-10-7 = 41

Parkway West 5-7-8-14-2 = 36

On Tuesday, January 30th hosted the Longhorns of Parkway West. The Neers jumped out to an early lead. Kris Nelson knocked down a 3 in the first quarter. The early attack was balanced out with a bucket from Ricky McNabb and Ahmad Hicks. The Pioneers led 7-5 after 1. In the second quarter the Pioneers were held to just one basket from the field. The Pioneers got busy from the line though. Devon Lee knocked 2 free throws from the line. Mark Bearden, Ahmad Hicks, and Max Robinson each added one free throw in the quarter. The free throws allowed the Pioneers to walk into the locker ahead 14-12.

The third quarter saw Kirkwood extend their lead. The Pioneers used a mix of full court pressure and a match up zone defense to hold Parkway West to 8 points in the quarter. Conversely, the Wood went to the line 8 times making 6 in the quarter. Kirkwood's Mycole Pruitt continued his excellent work on the boards. After 3 quarters Kirkwood led 24-20. The game got dicey for Kirkwood in the 4th quarter. The 4th quarter saw 2 Parkway players score 6 points each in the quarter. However, once again Devon Lee went to the line to calmly make 2 free throws in the quarter. Mycole Pruitt also chipped in 2 points in the quarter. The quarter ended in a 34-34 tie.

The overtime period was unique in the fact that Kirkwood made no baskets from the field. However, the Neers made 7 free throws in the period. This included 3 from Ricky McNabb, 2 from Mycole Pruitt, and one each from Mark Bearden and Kris Nelson. The free throws culminated in an impressive overtime period and a 41-36 victory for Kirkwood. Mark Bearden had 13 in the game. Mycole Pruitt chipped in 7 along with 6 from Ricky McNabb. The Pioneers will be back in action on Friday, February 2nd when

 

 

 

Game 14   January 26, 2007    Site: Kirkwood High School

Kirkwood 8-10-16-14 = 48

McCluer 17-15-13-19 = 64

Kirkwood hosted the McCluer Comets on Friday, January 26th. The Pioneer's started slow falling behind 17-8 after 1 quarter. Mark Bearden turned in a good first half with 6 points in the first half. Mycole Pruitt also turned in a good effort on the boards on the first half. Despite this effort, the Neers went into the locker room down 32-18 at half as Kirkwood had several good looks at the basket that refused to go down.

The third quarter saw four Pioneers score, including Joe Comfort, Mycole Pruitt, Mark Bearden and Hunter Ward. It also saw some good offensive boards by Mycole and Mark. During the quarter Kirkwood cut the lead to 45-34. Early in the quarter, the Pioneers cut the lead into the single digits. However, in the end the Comets were too much for the Pioneers to handle and McCluer took the game 64-48.

The Pioneeers will be back in action Tuesday, January 30th when Kirkwood will host Parkway West.

 

 

Game 13   January 23, 2007    Site: Marquette High School

On 1-23-2007 the Marquette Mustangs hosted our Pioneers. The sophomore's welcomed Ahmad Hicks, Hunter Ward and Max Robinson from the freshman team. The game started slow offensively as the Pioneers trailed 5-4 at half. The second quarter saw fine performances from Mark Bearden and Mycole Pruitt. Mark had 5 points in the quarter and Mycole contributed 4. However, the Mustangs had a hot hand and went into the locker room ahead 21-14. In spite of a 9 point quarter by Mark Bearden, the Mustangs extended their lead to 39-25. The quarter saw Marquette drain 4 three pointers.

The Neers refused to quit, and made a strong run at the Mustangs in the fourth quarter. The quarter saw a balanced attack with 4 scorers including Kris Nelson, Joe Comfort, Mycole Pruitt and Mark Bearden all contributing in the quarter. The effort fell short with Kirkwood falling 49-43. Mark Bearden ended the game with a stellar performance of 24 points. Mycole Pruitt, who continues to improve in the post, contributed 11. Joe Comfort added 5, and Kris Nelson chipped in 3.

The Pioneers will be back in action at home on Friday, January 26 against McCluer. We look forward

 

 

Game 11   January 16, 2007    Site: St. Louis University High School

Kirkwood 9-8-11-17 = 45

SLUH 7-19-20-8 = 54 

On Tuesday, January 16th the Pioneers traveled to SLUH to take on the Junior Billikens. The Neers got off to a fast start taking a 5-0 lead with a 3 pointer by Britton Schlotz and a lay up after a great move to the basket by Ricky McNabb. Britton added another bucket in the quarter and Kris Nelson chipped in 2 free throws in the quarter leaving the Pioneers up 9-7 after 1 quarter. During the 2nd and 3rd quarter the Junior Bills used their home court advantage well. The Pioneers went into the locker room at halftime down by 26-17. SLUH dominated the third quarter with a successful press late in the quarter, extending their lead to 18 points at the end of the third.

The Pioneers refused to quit. Mycole Pruitt came alive in the post in the fourth quarter. He had 9 points in the quarter for a total of 13 points in the game. Britton added 8 points in the quarter as the Pioneers chipped steadily into SLUH's lead. It was too little to late, as Kirkwood fell 54-45. The sophomore's are back in action on Friday January, 19th as we travel to Northwest High School.

 

 

 

Game 10   January 3, 2007    Site: Kirkwood High School

Pattonville 45, Kirkwood 43

 

Kirkwood 10-6-13-14 = 43

Pattonville 4-11-16-14= 45

 

On Wednesday, January 3rd the Kirkwood Sophomores hosted the Pattonville Pirates. The Neers jumped out to an early 10-4 with Kris Nelson and Andrew Perry both knocking down 3's in the first quarter. The Pioneers saw their lead shrink to a single point at halftime, as Kirkwood went into the locker room with a 16-15 lead.

The Pirates came out strong in the second half and lead by 2 after 3 periods. The Pioneers continued to fight. In the fourth quarter Mark Bearden had a great quarter that included a 3 point field goal en route to an 8 point quarter. With time running out and down by 2 points, Kirkwood took a late shot that was unsuccessful. The final score was 45-43 in favor of the Pirates.

The scoring for the Pioneers was well distributed. Mark Bearden led the team with 12 points, followed closely by Ricky McNabb with 9 points. Andre3w Perry added 6 and both Kris Nelson and Devon Lee chipped in 5. Mycole Pruitt contributed on the boards.

The Sophomores will be back in action on January 16th when they travel to St. Louis University High.

 

Game 9   December 28   Site: Parkway North High School

Parkway South 56, Kirkwood 50

The Pioneers concluded their play in the Parkway Invitational with a close loss to Parkway South. After a rather uninspired defensive effort in the first half, the team tightened the screws a bit in the second half. All members were left wondering what a complete game would have produced. For the tournament Mark Bearden averaged 19 points per game. If a All-Tournament team would have been compiled he most certainly earned a spot on the roster.

 

Game 6   December 21    Site: Kirkwood High School

Webster Groves 54, Kirkwood 41,

On Thursday December, 21 the Sophomore boys' hosted Webster. The Pioneers fell behind a very good Webster team by 8 after the first half, and 16 after 3 quarters. However, the Pioneers refused to quit. Webster had to battle intensely to hold on to win by 6 points.

The Pioneers were led by an excellent performance by Mark Bearden. Bearden had 19 points including, 8 points in the fourth quarter. He also went 5 for 6 from the free throw line. Mark was joined in the effort by Robert Cannon and Ricky McNabb who had 6 each. In a display of a team effort, the Pioneers had 8 players who scored in the game. The 4th quarter saw a solid defensive effort as the Pioneers changed up defenses and pressured the ball resulting in holding the Statesmen to just 8 points in the quarter

 

 

Game 5   December 15    Site: Kirkwood High School

Kirkwood 44, Mehlville 38

On Friday December 15th the Kirkwood Pioneers boys' sophomore team played the Mehlville Panthers at home. Kirkwood jumped out to a 7 point after the first quarter, and went into the locker room at half time ahead by 4. Kirkwood maintained a lead in the second half and won the game by a score of 44-38. It was a hard fought game with a strong team effort by the Pioneers.

Kirkwood did a good job on the offensive boards. This led to a many good shots for the Pioneers. Mark Bearden led the offensive attack with 15 points. His effort was complimented by a strong offensive effort by Mycole Pruitt who had 8 points. Ricky McNabb chipped in 7 points. Joe Comfort and Devon Lee gave good efforts on the defensive side of the floor. The win lifted the team's record to 2-3 on the season.

The next game for the team will be at home on Thursday, December 21 at 5:30 against Webster Groves. Come out and see the sophomores in action!

 

Game 4   December 12    Site: Lafayette High School

On Tuesday December 12th the Kirkwood Pioneer’s sophomore team traveled to Lafeyette to take on the Lancers. The Pioneers fell to Lafeyette 52-41 in a hard fought game.

Kirkwood, led by strong efforts by Devon Lee, Mark Bearden and Mycole Pruitt kept the game close most of the game. Kirkwood moved the ball well, and played hard until the final buzzer sounded.

 

 

Game 3   November 29    Site: Lafayette High School

On Wednesday November 29th the Kirkwood Sophomore boys' basketball team played Rockwood Summit high School for consolation LSRS tournament. Kirkwood lost by 4 points in a hard fought game. Kirkwood, who was down 5 at the half, and 9 after 3 quarters closed the gap to lose by 4.

Mark Bearden turned in another fine game with 14 points. Ricky McNabb added 9, and Kris Nelson had 7. Mycole Pruitt had another good rebounding performance and chipped in 6 points.

 

 

 

Game 2   November 27    LSRS Tournament

The Kirkwood Pioneer's notched their first win of the season with a strong performance against Lindbergh on Monday, November 27. Kirkwood won the game 68-41.

Kirkwood did a fine job on the defensive boards, which led to many transition baskets. It was a fine team effort, with Joe Comfort, Mycole Pruitt, Kris Nelson, Mark Bearden and Ricky McNabb all scoring in double digits for the game.

 

Game 1   November 20    Site: Seckman High School

LSRS Tournament

The Kirkwood Sophomore boys' team opened the season in the LSRS tournament on Monday, November 20th. The game was played at Seckman High School. Kirkwood played hard in a see-saw game. Kirkwood opened an 11 point lead in the 3rd quarter. Beaumont's press, however was tough for the Pioneers to handle and the lead evaporated.

The 4th quarter saw Beaumont opened a lead. Kirkwood fell just short in their comeback attempt to lose by 1. Beaumont edged Kirkwood 50-49. Mark Bearden lead the offensive effort for Kirkwood with 18 points. Mycole Pruitt also had a strong performance and chipped in 12 points, including 10 in the first half.
