Game 13        January 12, 2008

Site – Kirkwood High School

Kirkwood 9-10-13-18 = 50

Northwest 9-6-4-12 = 31

On Saturday, January 12th Kirkwood hosted the Lion’s of Northwest. The Neers'' strategy was to put to mix up their defenses, with the overarching goal of putting a lot of pressure on the ball. In the first quarter, the Neers' and the Lion’s played to a 9-9 tie. Ahmad Hicks had 4 in the quarter and Stefan Moore had 3. The pressure on the Lions paid dividends in the second quarter. Giving up just 6 points in the quarter, the Neer’s carved out a 4 point lead as the buzzer sounded at half time.

The Sophomore’s turned up the pressure another notch in the third. Playing tough defense, the team gave up just 4 points in the quarter. Ahmad went 5 for 5 from the line en route to a 7 point quarter. Pete Krusing had 3 points in the quarter. The team opened up a 13 point lead. The Pioneers coasted to a 19 point win.

Ahmad Hicks had a season high 18 points in the game. Stefan poured in 12 and Pete added 8. The win extended the Sophomore winning streak to 4 and their season record to 9-4. Next up is a rematch with a tough McCluer team. The game will be on Friday, January 25th at McCluer at 5:00 P.M. Come out and support the Sophomore’s.

 

 

 

Game 12     January 8, 2008

Site – Kirkwood High School

Kirkwood – 8-10-18-11 = 47

Beaumont – 9-10-9-9 = 37

The Kirkwood Sophomore’s hosted Beaumont on Tuesday, January 8th. The Pioneers went into the game looking for a third victory in a row. The Neers' started slow, trailing by 1 at the end of the first quarter. The quarter Lawrence Williams had 5 of the team’s 8 points in the quarter. Beaumont kept up the pressure on Kirkwood. In the period, Nathan McMahon had 4 points. Stefan Moore and Ahmad Hicks both went 2 for 2 from the free throw line. However, the Pioneers went into the locker down 1, 19-18.

Kirkwood got busy in the third quarter, scoring 18 big points. Ahmad, Stefan, Nathan, Lawrence, Max Robinson and Hunter Amend all scored in the quarter. The team went 5 for 6 from the free throw line in the quarter. The team finished what was started in the fourth quarter. The team had five scorers in the fourth, with Joey Greenstein chipping in 2 and Andrew Gift making a free throw. Kirkwood had a total of 9 scorers in the game. The team put it’s “We Not Me” principle into practice, with all 11 Pioneers making an important contribution to the 10 point win.

 

 

Game 11     January 4, 2008

Site Kirkwood High School

Kirkwood 16-10-13-16 = 55

Marquette 14-9-7-12 = 42

On Friday January, 04TH, the Kirkwood Sophomore’s hosted the Marquette Mustangs. Kirkwood started quickly racking up 16 points in the first quarter. Ahmad Hicks, Stefan Moore, and Lawrence Williams all had 4 points in the quarter. The Neers' led by 2 at this point. The second quarter was saw Stefan, and Ahmad both knock down 3’s. Also, Pete Krusing went 2 for 2 from the line in the quarter as Kirkwood went into the locker room ahead 26-23.

Kirkwood pressured the ball hard in the third quarter forcing turnovers and several easy baskets. Nathan McMahon had 4 in the quarter. Pete Krusing joined in with a 3 and a 2. The Wood lead going into the final quarter was 9. Marquette was in foul trouble by the fourth quarter. Kirkwood stepped up to the challenge, hitting 7 out of 10 free throws in the quarter. This, combined with McMahon’s 3 pointer in the quarter, sealed the deal with a 55-42 win. Pete Krusing was the team’s top scorer with 13. Lawrence Williams chipped in 11, with Ahmad Hicks and Stefran Moore adding 9 each. Kirkwood’s showed marked improvement from the free throw line, making 13 out of 17, or 76%. The win extended the Sophomore’s record to 7-4.

 

Game 10        January 2, 2008

Site: Pattonville  High School

Kirkwood 44 Pattonville 32

The Kirkwood Sophomores got back to their winning ways in their first game of the new year. Traveling with the Freshman and Varsity, the Sophomores started the game a little sluggish. However, things picked up, as Stefan Moore drove to the basket for 2 in the second quarter. Than, Pete Krusing knocked down a shot to extend the Pioneer lead. Ahmad Hicks made a good defensive effort in the quarter.

Kirkwood took control of the game in second half and didn’t look back. The Neers' closed out the game with a solid 44-32 win. The win brought the team’s record to 6-4.

 

 

Parkway Central Tournament

Game 9      December 31, 2007

Site: Parkway Central High School

Kirkwood 6-15-10-8= 39

McCluer North 5-17-19-14=55

The Pioneers played McCluer North for 3rd place in the Parkway Central tournament. The Pioneers allowed only 5 points in the quarter taking a 1 point lead. Despite a great, 9 point 2nd quarter by Ahmad Hicks, the Pioneers lead evaporated by half time. The Neers' trailed by a narrow 1 point at half.

In the second half North ran the ball well on offense. The Neers were not able to match this intensity and fell behind by 10 points by the end of the 3rd quarter. McCluer North kept up the attach and finished off the Pioneers 55-39. Ahmad Hicks had a team high 17 points, and Lawrence Williams pumped in 10. The team’s record now stands at 5-4.

Kirkwood will play at Pattonville Wednesday, January 2nd at 4:30 P.M. Come out and support the Kirkwood Pioneer’s!

 

Parkway Central Tournament

Game 8      December 28, 2007

Site: Parkway Central High School

Kirkwood 12-12-13-4 = 41

McCluer 14-19-23-10 = 66

The Neers played McCluer the second round of the Parkway Sophomore tournament. The Pioneers hung tough early against McCluer. Justin Hilton had 4 points in the quarter. Ahmad Hicks, Max Robinson, Nathan McMahon and Scott Sonne all scored in the quarter. However, McCluer’s defensive effort led to a 2 point lead after 1 quarter. McCluer’s transition game hurt the Pioneer’s in the second quarter. McCluer led 33-24 at half. Kirkwood’s deficit would likely have been bigger, however, Max Robinson had a big 9 points in the quarter.

The second half saw much of the same transition game from McCluer. The withering attack put the Pioneers in a 56-37 hole after 3 quarters. The Pioneers did not make any ground in the 4th quarter, falling to McCluer 66-41. In spite of the loss, the team played hard for 4 quarters. Max Robinson led all Pioneer scorers with 13 points. Nathan McMahon added 11.

 

Parkway Central Tournament

Game 7      December 27, 2007

Site: Parkway Central High School

 

Kirkwood 14-12-13-3 = 42

Parkway Central 4-10-1-8 = 23

On Thursday December 27th the Pioneers played their first round game of the Parkway Central tournament. The Neers faced the host of the tournament, Parkway Central. The Pioneers got off to a quick start. The Pioneers played tough defense, early, holding Parkway Central to just 4 points. Pete Krusing and Stefan Moore both knocked down three pointers in the quarter as the Neers built a 10 point lead. The second quarter saw Stefan continue to have the hot hand knocking down 2 more 3 pointers. The Pioneers went led 26-14 at half.

The Pioneers aggressive defensive in the third quarter allowed the Neers to extend their lead to a whopping 24 points. Pete Krusing had 5 points in the quarter and Ahmad Hicks added 4. The Sophomore’s coasted to a 42-23 victory. Stefan Moore and Pete Krusing each had 11 points, leading the balanced Kirkwood offensive.

 

Game 6      December 21, 2007

Site: Webster Groves High School

Kirkwood 9-12-8-3 = 32

Webster 12-17-13-24 = 66

On Friday December, 21 the Kirkwood Boys’ Sophomore team played on the road against an undefeated Webster Groves team. Stefan Moore worked hard in the quarter and had 4 points. However, The Wood found their selves in an early hole as Webster rode strong ball pressure to a 12-9 first quarter lead. Kirkwood got busy early in the 2nd quarter and cut the lead to one point on the back of strong quarters by Ahmad Hicks and Lawrence Williams. However, Kirkwood’s surge was thwarted by the end of the quarter as Webster extended their lead to 8 by the end of the quarter.

Webster continued to be on the offensive in the third quarter. In spite of the 4 points that Lawrence Williams had in the quarter, the third quarter ended with Webster up 13. The Pioneers could not halt the Statesmen advance as the Wood lost 66-32. Lawrence Williams led all Pioneer scorers with 9 points. The sophomores record fell to 5-3.

 

 

Game 5      December 14, 2007

Site: Mehlville High School

Kirkwood 41, Mehlville 36

The Sophomore team survived a tough encounter with Mehlville on Friday December 14th. Trailing most of the game,  the team refused to quit and kept the score close through three quarters. Prior to the fourth quarter, team members kicked up their intensity and decided in the fourth they would "pump up the volume".

Mehlville was able to match the intensified Pioneer attack early on even though their lead was being chipped away. Using relentless pressure, timely rebounding, and improved effort, the team finally took the lead outscoring Mehlville 15-7 in the fourth quarter.

An area of concern for the team this season was taken care of on this night as Pete Krusing and Ahmad Hicks sealed the game at the foul line. The team was led in scoring by two thirds of the freshmen triumvirate. Stefan Moore contributed 13 pts. and Lawrence Williams 10. A much awaited rematch with Webster Groves lies on the horizon Friday, December 21st at Webster. Their first game with Webster was a foul fest. If the team is too have a chance Friday, one area they must improve is Free Throw percentage.

 

Game 4      December 11, 2007

Site: Kirkwood High School

Kirkwood – 6-10-11-9=36

Lafayette - 4-7-6-9 =26

After an 11 day layoff the Pioneers hosted the Lafayette Lancers. It was the first home game of the season for the Sophomore’s. The game started slow for the Pioneers. The first quarter was marked by several missed opportunities. However, Nathan McMahon got busy and had 4 points in the quarter. The sophomores also welcomed Stefan Moore to the team, who had a 2 point first quarter. Combined, the duo helped lead the Pioneers to a narrow 6-4 lead after the first quarter. The second quarter saw some excellent teamwork. The Pioneers not only passed the ball inside, we drove in as well. No less than 4 Neers scored in the quarter. Stefan Moore and Pete Krusing each had 3 and Ahmad Hicks and Scott Sonne had 2 each. Kirkwood went into the locker room with a 16-11 halftime lead.

The second half saw Kirkwood keep up the pressure on the Lancers. Nathan McMahon worked hard on the boards, and had 6 big points in the quarter. Pete Krusing handled the ball well. Stefan Moore went to the basket. The Pioneers defense held the Lafayette to just 6 points in the quarter. Consequently, the Pioneers led by a 27-17 margin.

The Sophomore’s sealed the deal in the fourth quarter. The quarter saw a good defensive effort by Eli Thayer and Hunter Amend, among others. Lawrence Williams had a good 4th quarter adding 2 buckets. The Pioneers didn’t look back en route to a 36-26 victory. The team felt good, as all 11 Pioneers contributed to the victory. It was a true team effort.

Nathan McMahon led all scorers with 12. Stefan Moore chipped in 9. Pete Krusing had 5 and Lawrence Williams had 4.

The Pioneers will be back in action Friday, December 14, 2007 against Mehlville. The game will be played at Mehlville at 5:30 P.M. The Kirkwood boys’ varsity team will play after the Sophomores at 7:00 P.M. Come out to Mehlville and enjoy the action!

 

Game 3   November 28    Site: Lindbergh High School

LSM Tournament Finals

The Sophomore Pioneers took on rival Webster on Nov. 28th in the championship game of the Lindberg Tournament. In a back and forth game with multiple fouls, turnovers, and lead changes the final two minutes sealed the pioneers fate. With the backcourt exhausted, and their frontline in foul trouble, the Pioneers were unable to match Webster anymore blow for blows. At the final horn Kirkwood was left eagerly anticipating a December 21st rematch with the Statesmen.

 

 

Game 2   November 20    Site: Seckman High School

LSM Tournament Semifinals

Game by quarters

Kirkwood 13-16-7-9 = 45

Marquette 14-6-9-14 = 43

In the second round of the LSM tournament the Kirkwood Pioneers took on the Marquette Mustangs on Tuesday, November 20th. The game was hard fought from the start. Scott Sonne turned in a powerful first quarter fighting on the boards and scoring 6 points. Pete Krusing also knocked down a 3 in the quarter. This allowed the Wood to hang close to Marquette, down 14-13 after the first quarter. The Sophomore’s got busy in the second quarter. No less than six Pioneers scored in the quarter including Ahmad Hicks, Max Robinson, Pete Krusing, Scott Sonne, Justin Hilton and Lawrence Williams. The Pioneers stepped up their defensive effort in the quarter holding Marquette to only 6 points in the quarter. The Pioneers went into the locker room ahead 29-20.

The third quarter saw Marquette picking up the pace. Marquette cut the lead of the Pioneers to 7 after 3 quarters. Krusing had a good quarter, scoring 5 points and helping to fight off a potential devastating Mustang surge.

The 4th quarter was tight. Marquette continued to chip away at the lead. However, Max Robinson did a good job getting to the basket with 2 baskets. Ahmad Hicks drew a foul late in the game and knocked down a crucial free throw to put Kirkwood up by 4 late in the game. Kirkwood held on to win 45-43. Kirkwood was a disappointing 10-26 from the line. The team left knowing that hitting free throws will be a priority as we play Webster Groves Wednesday November, 28th at 7:00 at Lindbergh High School. This will be for the championship of the tournament.

 

 

Game 1   November 19    Site: Marquette High School

LSM Tournament

Game by quarters

Kirkwood 12-5-15-11 = 43

University City 13-11-6-10 = 40

The Kirkwood Sophomore Pioneers opened their season on Monday, November 19th against the University City Lions, in the LSM tournament. The game was a tough game from the start. The first quarter ended with University City leading 13-12. University City had a good second quarter, knocking down 2 3’s and racing to a 24-17 lead going into the locker room at half.

The second half saw a turnaround. Pete Krusing made excellent post feeds in the quarter to Lawrence Williams and Max Robinson. Both Lawrence and Max made excellent finishes. Also, Scot Sonne got busy in the quarter making an excellent left handed lay up off of a great pass from Ahmad Hicks. The Neers outscored University City 15-6 in the quarter, grabbing a 32-30 lead. The 4th quarter Kirkwood showed there meddle. Under full court pressure from the Lions, the Wood stepped up. Breaking the press with good passing, and scoring a couple of easy baskets. The Lions did not quit however, forcing the Wood to make a late game turnover that gave them a chance to catch up. Kirkwood held on to win 43-40.

Lawrence Williams and Nathan McMahan led with 11 points each. Scott Sonne had 8, Ahmad Hicks had 6 and Max Robinson chipped in with 5. Pete Krusing had several clutch assists.
